If you want to give MLK as a holiday but want to stay even related to paid time off, this is your playbook. 1) Trade out President's Day or Columbus Day if have it. 2) If you have floating holidays or generalized PTO, reduce by one day and designate MLK as official in exchange. This day was never intended to be a free day off, and was never communicated as one to staff. As I said, we sponsored several events that are available today for volunteer work. June 19th, formally named Juneteenth, became an official state holiday in Texas on January 1, 1980, and was proclaimed a federal holiday on June 16, 2021—making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was proclaimed a holiday in 1983. Why should companies recognize MLK Day of Service? Companies that observe MLK Day of Service demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility, employee engagement, and community impact. Here’s why your organization should participate: Reinforce core values: Celebrating MLK Day allows companies to align their actions with values such as We don't talk about it because unless you work in something involving a bank, schools, or your company is just extra nice, you don't usually get MLK day off. Maybe the question should be why so few of companies in general don't give that particular holiday off. But singling out Amazon like they're somehow uniquely uncaring is asinine. MLK Day doesn't exist to give employees a three-day weekend; it should be a day of service. Employers should acknowledge the holiday by encouraging employees to volunteer during their time off, or better yet, organize company-wide volunteering during the holiday.
